Third Trimester | Week 36~

Week 36 will always have a very special place on my heart. I don't even remember much about what we did that week but I remember feeling calm and enjoying our last moments before we became a family of three. My mom was due to arrive the day after I started week 37 and I knew the moment she got here our focus would drastically change from "Enjoying being pregnant" to "Let's get ready for labor". So me and Hubby spend a lot of quality time together, we drove to San Francisco twice, we went to the mall, we had tiny dates like having Jamba Juice and FiveGuys, we watched a couple of movies on the couch. I just really remember being really happy we could enjoy a bit of time in peace.

Week 36

The day week 37 started something changed. "Practice" contractions started to feel different that night. The next day (June 1) we went to the airport at noon to pick up my mom, and by 1 am that night we were sure I was in early labor. The baby wouldn't come for another 12 days (12 days in labor!!) but for the next 2 days we were in constant state of waiting for the contractions to get more intense so we could go to the hospital. That didn't happend so we focused on finishing all the things we needed for the baby! I didn't have a bathtub, neither the crib nor the bassinet had sheets, the hospital bag wasn't packed, and so on. So we forgot to take pictures for week 37 and 38, so this is the last one :)

On week 37 and 38 I just spend time with my mom and Hubby, and waited and waited to go into labor. After a couple of days of contractions I was EXHAUSTED, I could hardly sleep, my back was killing me, and I was just ready for the pregnancy to end. I was scared shitless of labor too though ~>.<~

I went into active labor on June 11th at 1:40am. But that is an entire different blog post :)

Leche Asada~!

Hi, guys~!

I have a really nice and delicious desert for you~! It's a typical desert in Chile called "Leche Asada" (or literally "Baked Milk").

Ingredients:
1 Lt whole milk
4 Tablespoons of granulated sugar
5 Eggs
1 Teaspoon of vanilla extract
1 Orange (Optinal)
1 Cup of granulated sugar
Water

1- Pre heat the oven to 360F (Or 180C)
2- Put the cup of sugar on a pot and add water, just enough so all the sugar is wet. Put on low to medium heat and let it do its thing until it looks like caramel.
*If you are brave enough to do this without the water, go ahead. I'm just not... >.<
3- In a bowl mix the milk, sugar, eggs and vanilla.
4- Once the caramel is done, when it changes color to than beautiful caramel color we all love, pour into the baking dish. Make sure it covers all the base of the dish. Let it set for 5 minutes.
5- Once the caramel is set, pour the milk mix on top going through a sieve first to leave all the lumps from the eggs behind.
6- You can add the orange zeste now if you'd like the extra flavor :)
7- Put in the oven and let it bake for 40 minutes or until ir sets and the top is golden brown :P

All done~!
Let it cool before you eat~!

Hola~!!

Listo~!
Dejar enfriar antes de comer~!

Project Nursery | Mobile

Hi, guys~!

This time on Project Nursery... A mobile~! This was so easy and fast! I had all the materials laying around and just needed to find some patterns online.

Then I just sewed around the edges with a blanket stitch, put some filling in before closing it and then hang it above the crib :)

We've tried to do as much as we can before baby comes and we've been to San Francisco twice now. The second time we went to Muir Woods National Monument, mainly because this place was used to film Star Wars :) More specifically this is Endor, where Ewoks live in Return of the Jedi.
We loved it~! but we didn't find an Ewok :(

Time has really flown by with everything there is to do after we moved, lots of errands and finding a new doctor, take the tour around the birthing center, etc. We're enjoying our new house and I've started nesting :)!

Baby's Name | a bit of a rant

If you have a pregnant friend now or in the future, DON'T tell her you hate the baby's name, and, on top of that, DON'T make rude jokes about how badly you hate it. And one more: DON't ask your 9-month pregnant friend "are you sure you want to name him that?"
Why?
First of all: it's not your place.
Second: it's none of your bussiness.
Third: what is it that you expect to gain from that? That they change their mind about a desicion (that probably took months to set) literally less than 4 weeks from the baby being born? Nope, It's not gonna happen. All you will get from it is a very upset friend. A very pregnant, very upset friend. Why would you want that?

So this happended to me about a week ago, and I'm still processing it, and, frankly, I still don't know exactly how to deal with it. I thought I might feel better if I wrote about it.

When we first started thinking of names we didn't know if we were expecting a boy or a girl. We made list for both, and before long both lists were quite long. Then we found out it was a boy! So we started to get through the list. Me and my husband both really like unusual names, not made up names, names you don't hear in everyday conversations, but that you may have heard once or twice in person or a book. Also, since we live in the US we looked for a name that sounded right in both Spanish and English, without losing his Latin-American heritage (if that makes any sense), why would we name him a completely American name that wouldn't go right with our last names but also that our families —most of them speak limited English— would have problems pronouncing it?

We picked a name. It was hard to go down to one. It's also a lot of pressure to pick something for someone else that will last a lifetime! So we struggled. If you have kids, you might know how hard it is to name your baby. It's not something as easy as ordering at a restaurant, where you have a few minutes to decide and if you mess up and hate the food, no big deal, you can try again next time. But, we picked a name. A name we love. In our opinion, a very cute name. And, from what some of our friend told us, a name that suited us perfectly. We are not thrilled with the English pronunciation of it but it's not that bad, plus we think he will go by the shortened version of it, wich sounds lovely in both languages.

Still, we wanted to be sure this was THE name before we told everyone. We tried using it between us and get used to it for a few days, and we prepared ourselves for the reaction of our friends and family. We aren't naive enough to think every would love it as much as we did, but we thought none would be rude about it either. Most of the reactions were pretty good, some you could tell weren't exactly sure how to feel about it, but, given a bit of time (it has been over 4 months now), are now used to it and love it. Some actually said; "what an original name" and didn't elaborate if they liked it or not, which is fine by me. They don't have to love it, we do. And we also had the one couple that absolutely loved it and was really excited about it. All in all, a pretty normal set of reactions. Everyone was pretty nice about it and if they didn't like our choice, they didn't say it, following the golden rule of "If you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything."

That was it, until last week. I didn't get the message, Hubby did. And told me about it, not much detail, just the grasps. But it was enough to make me angry. This message came from a good friend of ours, although he was friends with Hubby first, and best man at our wedding, actually. In this message (as far as I'm told by this time) he asks if we are aware this name has a pronunciation (in English) that sounds exactly like a mispronunciation (in spanish) of the word "towel (toalla)". Simply rude to be honest. And totally unnecessary to say, too. I get mad, so does Hubby but he handles it better. I was always prepared for someone to say something rude, but never actually expected it from our closest friend, so it hurt tenfold.

I try to let it go. I can't. It pops into my mind at random times of the day, for days. So, I give up. I ask Hubby to show me the whole conversation. He opens up Facebook messenger on his phone, which is the easiest way we have to talk to friends all the way back home. The conversation sends me over the edge with rage. Yes, I might be over exaggerating but I just can't really believe such a lack of protocol and decorum.

At the very start he asks how the baby is, calling him by the mispronunciated word in Spanish, and then right away asking if we are aware of how it sounds like in English (yes, of course we know). If we know it sounds like "towel" in Spanish. (Yes, of course, lots of words sound like others.) Then he asks if we are really sure we want to name him that. (Really? REALLY?!) Then, since Hubby's answers are too nice (beacuse he's a better person than I am), he continues to ask why don't we name him so and so, and gives a list of ridiculous names, obviously mocking the fact that any of those are better than ours. and then I just stop reading. I just can't anymore.

So, here is what I think about this situation. Naming a baby is hard enough for first-time parents to also have to deal with friends who are being disrespectful and crossing lines they shouldn't. So respect those lines. It is NOT your bussiness what people call their babies (make your own and name him what you want). It is NOT your place (even if you are close family or the very closest of friends) to tell them what the name sounds like or doesn't sound like. Believe me, they chose the name, they did the reseach, they know there's a writer name that (and no, they don't care if you hate his books), they know it's a popular name in whatever part of the world, and they absolutely don't care if it was the name of a dog you once saw on the street (therefore, it will always be a dog's name for you). And it is definitely NOT your prerogative to let them know you hate the name. Just be polite, accept that your friends baby is named the way is it and learn to love it. You can hate it all you want on your own time.

Also, if they are announcing the name is BECAUSE they're sure about it. You gain nothing, NOTHING by asking "are you sure?", you can only achieve two things; plant doubt in a decision that already was hard enough to make and/or always be remembered like the friend that wasn't supportive of your choise.

Why would you want to make it harder for someone you love? Be supportive, your friends are having a baby! :) That baby is also going to be part of your life! Just remember it's not your baby so there are lines you shouldn't cross and opinions you shouldn't give if you are not asked for them (and maybe, not even then).

Third Trimester | Month 7~

Hello~!
TO be quite honest I don't remember much about month 7 except that I ate a lot... A LOT! By week 28 I felt so much better, all the nausea was gone and my appetite was completely back so eating was no longer a job and I was able to enjoy it. All my energy came back too but in such altitude doing too much was exhausting so I was resting quite a lot still. I was definitely feeling the need to "nest" but since we were moving before the baby comes I just had to keep it inside of me until we were on our new home :)

Thanks for reading~!

Month 7

Hola~!

Really Easy Potato Soup~

Hi, there!

I have a really easy and quick recipe for you today~!

Potato Soup

Ingredients:
3 medium potatoes
1 Leek
Chicken or vegetable broth
A bit of milk or heavy cream
Salt and pepper

1- Slice the leek really thin and cook in a big pot with a bit of butter.

2- While the leeks cooks, peel and slice the potatoes. Once the leeks gets soft add the sliced potatoes to the pot and steer together for a bit. (Add a bit more butter if necessary)

3- Next, add the broth (or water, add salt if you choose water) and let get to boil and let the potatoes cook.

4- Once the potetoes are done take them to the blender. A bit of advice, drain the liquid out of the potatoes and leeks but keep it a side for a bit. Put the potatoes on the blender first and little by little add the liquid to it. This way you can get the consistency you prefer, it's easier to put more liquid to the mix than it is to take out when the soup is too thin ;)

5- Take the soup back to the pot on low heat and taste for salt and pepper. When you are ready to serve add a dash of milk or heavy cream to make it smoother.

6- Add any garnish you like; parsley, croutons, chesse, paprika, etc. I had some baguette from the day before and just made some toast with it :)

Enjoy~!

Hola~!

Second Trimester~

Hello~!

Second trimester was a lot more fun than the first, but still had some difficult moments.
Month 4 actually started just before christmas! and right before we found out I was pregnant we had planned a surprise trip back to Chile to surprise our parents for the holidays. That's why pictures from week 14 through week 16 look so diferent, It was summer time over there :) Morning sickness actually subsided quite a lot while we were there (seeing my mom helped a lot I must say) but I was TIRED all the time. We ate a lot of yummy things we missed and saw a lot of friends and family :)
Right now, in the US, we live in Colorado in a very small town very, very up in the mountains. So we came back from holiday altitude sickness hit me hard, I could hardly keep food down and I actually had to spend about two weeks in bed untill I felt somewhat normal.
Then I started to feel a bit better and almost normal, no more altitude sickness or morning sickness~! and then... Husband got a cold... which he passed down to me and it hit me a lot harder than him. I actually got over it quicker than I thought I would, and just in time for me to visit my friends back in Indiana for a weekend while Hubby visited UCDavis. I'm very happy I got to do that trip, I had a lovely, lovely time over there and it was just what I needed.
From then on, pregnancy got a bit easier every day, at least in the food department. My appetitte was completely back~! yaay~!

Month 4

Month 5

Month 6

Hola~!

Fluffy Mini Muffins

Yes, I was craving chocolate chip muffins :D I decided to make them on a cupcake pan to make a smaller version than usual muffins because; one, there're cuter that way and 2; I had more control of how much I was eating.
I love this recipe, they come out really soft and the top gets crunchy, which is exactly what I love about muffins~
Enjoy!

Fluffly Chocolate Chip Muffins

Ingredients;
2 cups all purpose flour
1/3 cup light brown sugar
1/3 cup sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup butter (room temperature)
2 eggs
2/3 cup milk
1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups chocolate chips (milk or bitter)

Directions;
1- Preheat oven to 400°F. Line muffin pan (or cupcake pan if you want the mini version) with paper liners or spray non-stick cooking spray on each cup.
2- On a bowl mix all the dry ingredients. Set aside
3- On another bowl mix the rest of the ingredients. Save the chocolate chips for later.
4- Add the liquid ingredients to the dry mixture and stir until just combined, be careful not to over mix the batter.

5- Gently fold the chocolate chips into the batter
6- Evenly divide batter into muffin pan wells. Bake for 17-20 min or until you can pick them with a toothpick and it comes out clean.

7- Remove form pan and let them cool for 5 min.

Disfruten!

Ingredientes;
2 tazas de harina sin polvos
1/3 taza de azúcar morena
1/3 taza de azúcar granulada
2 cucharaditas de polvos de hornear
1/2 cucharadita de sal
110 gramos de mantequilla (a temperatura ambiente)
2 huevos
2/3 leche
1 1/2 cucharaditas de extracto de vainilla
1 1/2 chips de chocolate (de leche o bitter)

Instrucciones;

First Trimester~!

Hello~!

When we first find out I was pregnant, and after we calmed down a bit haha~, I wanted to start doing weekly photographs to remember the process of how big I was gonna get. Looking around Pinterest and other blogs, I also found this idea of photographing fruits and vegetables to show how big the baby was that particular week, so we decided that's what we wanted to do :).

We did a pretty good job of keeping up with this every week considering that the first trimester was hell on earth for me. Morning sickness was awful, and lasted all day long. I spent most of it in bed, or lying on the couch as I had little to no energy at all..., and forcing myself to eat something before the empty stomach made the nausa 20 times worse... wich made no sense at all to me! When you feel sick and don't feel like eating, eating actually makes you feel worse right?. By week 11 I thought I might actually survive the first trimester with out throwing up... that didn't happen, did it? nope.

Thanks for reading~!

Month 2

Month 3

Hola~!

Banana/Strawberry Smoothie~

Hi~!

Smoothies are going around a lot recently, but to be completely honest I don't like the ones that have tons and tons of different ingredients and flavors in it. I prefer them quite simple.
I drink a lot of these! They're an easy and awesome breakfast or afternoon snack :)

Ingredients:
One or two bananas (Depends on you)
A few strawberries
1 minute Oats (around 1/2 cup, but put as much as you want)
Milk or Almond Milk (about 1 cup, again, as much as you want)
Ice!

Just put everything on the blender and make it as smooth or as chunkie as you want it :)

Thanks for reading~!

Hola~!

New Start!

Hi~!!
I started this blog over a year ago! wow! I was really excited to do it and I was planning on doing it pretty often... but life kinda got in the way for a bit, and it took a while for me to really get into the idea again.
I'm really excited about it again and this time I'm making a really good effort to make it work :)
So, stick around for everything that's going on in 2015! A lot of changes are coming up, including a brand new adittion to our little family :) also, you can expect a lot of DIY, recipes for yummy things and pictures of nothing of importance.

Thanks for reading!

Hola~!!
